Import iPhone Notes Extension
The purpose of this extension is to import iPhone notes created by the GEDitMobile app on your phone to the genealogy file on your Mac laptop or desktop. The initial steps to using this extension are:
- Make sure the file you are viewing in GEDitMobile came from the same GEDCOM data you are viewing in GEDitCOM II (or GEDitCOM; this extension works for both applications).
- While traveling with you phone, but without access to you Mac computer with GEDitCOM II, you can use GEDitMobile to add "iPhone Notes" to various records in your file.
- When you later have access to GEDitCOM II, transfer the notes from your phone to your computer and run this script (as explained below).
For more details on transferring your file to your iPhone and later transferring iPhone notes back to your computer, see "GEDitMobile for iPhone" in the GEDitCOM II help window.
Running the iPhone Extension
Once some collection of iPhone notes are transferred to your computer, run this extension to import them to the corresponding file on your computer as follows:
- Choose "Import iPhone Notes" from the "Editing Tools" submenu in the "Extensions" menu.
- A "file chooser" dialog box will open. Select one or more iPhone note files (they all have extension
.ipn). You can select multiple files by shift- or command-clicking on files. When done, click the "Open" button.
- Each file selected will be processed and imported into you file. If any uncertainty about where to import a note (such as unrecognized record ID or name for the note), you will get a dialog box to decide how to proceed. You can confirm or skip importing of notes with an uncertainty.
Report on Import Results
When the extension is done, a report window will open to summarize the import results:
- Successful imports will have a link to the new notes and the record that received the note.
- An iPhone note on a note record will append to the current note and the report will link to that modified note record.
- The extension automically skips imports that are identical to previous imports. Thus if you re-run the extension twice for the same iPhone note, the report will state it was skipped because it matches previously imported text.
- A note that has the wrong record ID or name will be skipped and the report will explain why.
