Generalized Table of Cells

You can think of a template as providing instructions for defining a collection of cells in the window or on the page. The cells begin at the top-left corner and progress across and down the window as you add more. You can define properties of the cells and of the window.

The template for a GEDCOM Record begins with the first cell. Various GENerel commands are used define the properties of each cell; these properties include:

  1. Cell Style such as label cell, text editing cell, or button cell. The cell style defines some features of how the cell appears, but more importantly it defines the action GEDitCOM II takes when the user clicks on the cell or determines how the user might edit the data.
  2. Cell dimensions such as height and width.
  3. Many other cell properties such as border style, text, fonts, colors, a cell image, etc.

When the first cell is finished, the next cell gets defined. The next cell follows immediately after the first cell. The cells continue until a row is full, at which time the next row begins. The next row will begin just below the previous row where the height of the previous row is taken as the height of the tallest cell in that row. Various spacing commands can adjust spacings between cells and between lines or can start the next cell at any location in the window.

There is no need to line up rows and columns like a table. Each cell can have any width and height, there can be spacings between rows and cells, and any row can have any number of cells.
