Move Part of Place to Address Extension

When organizing places, our recommendation is to limit text in place names to town level and to put all address information in the associated address field. This script makes it easy to make that change for an place name in you file that currently contains an address.

To complete the desired move, select a place record and then:

  1. Run this extension in the "Editing Tools" section of the "Extensions" menu.
  2. The places's current name will appear in an editing field. You should delete the address part of the name leaving the remaining name as any contiguous block on unchanged characters. You can delete extra text before and after the new name, but not within it.
  3. When done editing, click "Move." All the deleted text will be moved to addresses in all events and attributes that use that place and the name of the place record will be changed to the new name in the remaining characters.
  4. If the remaining place name now matches another place name, you will be asked if you want to merge them now. It is usually next to merge them.

To move addresses in multiple places, select as many place records as you want and then run the script. Repeat the above steps for each place. If one of the selected places does not need a change, you can click "Skip" or just not delete any characters.
